State of Play

In Finland, competitive gaming is already a sport fit for television, but we are still light years away from the hysteria surrounding the StarCraft strategy video game in South Korea. A gamer with skills is a future achiever and a veritable rock star – a disciplined performer who makes fans’ knees quiver.

For middle-school boys, professional gaming offers a fast track to their dreams, but even though the top gamers get to trade school for full-time keyboard punching, they have very little time to enjoy their success. In this bona fide sports documentary, the stakes are high. When the gaming world is rocked, the hopefuls who have given their all are forced to weigh the value of their sacrifices. The kids are still young, sensitive and a little bit cocky. While the suits running the pro league are lecturing to the gamers, the teenagers are blissfully sleeping. The best of the best have to work all through the night.
