Divine Location

In the Horde district of Dortmund a paradise is in the making. The enormous steel mill facility that has ruled the landscape for decades will be blown up to make room for an artificial lake and apartment buildings.

Numerous and anonymous lives become entangled in the construction of the lake. For a young couple buying their dream home the area promises a bright future, but a café owner and a factory worker mourn the loss of their livelihoods. A local historical society wants to make sure that the region’s past won’t be washed away in the lake.

Marketing people have their worries too: should the new buildings reflect Bauhaus or Tuscany? The endearing film documents both change and stability. Retouching a region’s look and reputation can obscure the pecking order: who should come first, new or old inhabitants? There are also rules to enjoying paradise: no picnicking, no swimming and no bird muck.
