The Gleaners

The changing world is tearing a gap between generations. The Chinese director, Zuyi Ye, depicts his own farming family, revealing its connecting and separating factors in the turning point of the country’s economic structure and traditions. The 26 long, static shots underline the slow and natural rhythm of the countryside in a time when the fast-paced image flow has become mainstream.

Farming does no longer earn a living, and fields are being razed for construction sites. Many farmers give up and move to the city, but for Zuyi Ye’s elderly parents that is no solution.

The camera picks up family conversations, dinners and chores. The conversations are often about making a living, but also about values and life choices. The traditional mother lectures his son about his single life and career choices. The parents also talk about their youth: the times of China’s agricultural reform and the famine.
