Gangster of Love

Finding love is not easy in a Croatian small town. This works to the advantage of Nediljko Babic, whose wily ways have earned him the nickname ‘Gangster’. He specializes in arranging marriages in the village of Imotsk. In Croatia, there are several matchmakers, but Babic claims to be among the most famous. Gangster of Love focuses on him, his business and the customers hoping to find their match.

People have several reasons to seek an arranged marriage. The interviewees talk about disappointments in previous choices – instead of a great love story, they now seek someone to share their everyday life with. The definition of this ‘sharing’ highlights local gender roles, with powerful restrictions for both men and women. Expectations exclude certain people who don’t meet them: a woman runs from one meeting to another, when none of the men want to support her son from a previous marriage. Gangster of Love depicts the needs of marriage-seekers without condemning either the gender roles or Babic. Finally, we get to see how many of these seekers actually managed to find love.
