Deep Love

Towards the end of Deep Love, we are at the Red Sea. Two divers, not mere amateurs but technical divers, move deeper down, metre by metre, with several tanks and mixtures of breathing gas. One diver joins his thumb and forefinger in a circle. ‘Is everything OK?’ he signs. It takes a while to get an answer and the first diver seems to decide to start turning back, but then the other diver returns the sign: ‘Everything OK.’ The dive continues.

Janusz Solarz had a decades-long career as a scuba-diver and diving instructor under his belt, when one day, while instructing a group on ice, he suffered a stroke. It left him partially paralyzed and damaged his speech centre, so that his partner Joanna is now the only one who undestands his speech.

Seven years later, the still paralyzed Janusz, now in his sixties, is determined to get back into the water and the depths which are challenging for even healthy divers. Janusz only feels alive in the water, and not even Joanna’s reasoning and concerns are enough to dissuade him.

This Polish documentary is equally a story about compromises demanded in a relationship as well as Janusz’s gradual progress towards the new meaning of his life, towards new depths.
